Biography

Michael “Mike” Mills is an Australian multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter from Melbourne, best known as the creative force behind the progressive rock band Toehider. He founded Toehider in 2008 with illustrator Andrew Saltmarsh, and is effectively a one-man band in the studio, writing and performing the vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, drums and programming himself (he also plays instruments such as Irish bouzouki, sitar and percussion). The project first drew wide attention through its ambitious “12 EPs in 12 months” release run in 2009-2010. Mills is widely praised for his powerful, wide-ranging voice, with a vocal range spanning roughly four octaves and influences including Bruce Dickinson and Ian Gillan.

Beyond Toehider, Mills is a recurring guest vocalist for Arjen Lucassen’s Ayreon, appearing on the albums The Theory of Everything, The Source and Transitus, as well as the live Ayreon Universe production. Live, he typically performs on guitar while session musicians cover the remaining instruments.
